A Letter from CINE President Donald Thoms

Donald Thoms

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the new edition of our CINE newsletter. We've been really busy during the past few months and we have a lot to share with you.

To start off, thanks to all of you who have been coming to our website on a regular basis. Our numbers are way up and we appreciate your support. Much thanks to Ken Burns, who was the guest on our very first CINE Master Class. He was a real sport, and the next we hear from him, I promise we’ll have video of him to share. And thanks also go out to Mat Tombers, our past President of CINE for conducting the interview.

Coming up for this edition, we have a great Master Class with Dan Glickman. Dan, as many of you know, is the Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). How many of you know just what they do? Dan sat down with me and talked about his organization. He also pondered many issues facing filmmakers in America and the film industry in general. This interview is on video, and I enjoyed being with him.

For our next Master Class, we're going to talk to Pat Aufderheide, the Chair of the Center for Social Media at American University, who is just a smart and fascinating leader in our community. We talked a lot about fair trade concerns for filmmakers. And in the near future, I'm going to sit down with Tracie Thoms, actor and singer. She's been in several films (The Devil Wears Prada, Rent, Grindhouse) and is a co-star in the TV series Cold Case. Tracie will talk about breaking into the film business, working with directors and her involvement with young student actors (and yes, she's my daughter).

I'exciting evening, and I hope you all join us. The event will be held at the Newseum, a beautiful and dynamic new facility here in Washington, D.C., on April 24th. We will be honoring the CINE Golden Eagle winners of the past year and handing out Masters Series Awards to the best of the best. We will also be honoring film and television star Edward James Olmos with our Lifetime Achievement Award. "Eddie" will be at the gala along with other television and film personalities. Please look out for the announcement and get your tickets early.

This is a great issue, and we hope you enjoy and come back often. If you have any questions or comments, please contact the CINE office.

Sincerely,

Donald Thoms
