A Letter from CINE President Rita Mullin

Rita-Mullin

Summer is traditionally the season for people to take a breather and enjoy time with family and friends. I hope each of you have the opportunity to do so before Labor Day ushers in the Fall rush of responsibilities.

Here at CINE so far, summer has been anything but lazy. Our Gala in May was a great success. We moved the festivities to the Round House Theatre in Bethesda, which is a wonderful venue, and honored two industry greats: John Ford, President of Programming for Ion Television, who received the Leadership Award, and Steve James, director of HOOP DREAMS, our Trailblazer Award recipient. The quality of the Masters and student Award of Excellence winners just get stronger each year, and this spring's winners were no exception. Congratulations to all of you.

Our Spring 2011 competition winners were announced recently. Thanks to the many people who viewed entries in our selection process. Our Fall competition opens on August 1, with categories for industry professionals as well as students. A link to all competition information is on our home page. From the Spring and Fall winners we will choose our Masters and Award of Excellence winners for 2012 - so it's not too late for you to be honored at next Spring's Gala.

In June, after fifty years in the District of Columbia, CINE headquarters moved to Bethesda, Maryland, convenient to the Bethesda Metro. Our new address is:

4641 Montgomery Avenue, Suite 512
Bethesda, MD 20814
Phone: 301-652-8714

Sincerely,
Rita Mullin

Top 10 Questions About Your Producer's "Errors and Omissions" Insurance

ChubbChubb has insured video and film producers for more than 40 years, so we've seen a fair amount of lawsuits against producers over their content-related activities. We understand that in today's constantly-shifting legal landscape, the precise nature of media liability lawsuits can be difficult to predict. That's why having media liability/errors and omissions (E&O) coverage specifically for video and film producers is so critical.

Here are ten questions to consider when selecting media liability/E&O coverage:

1. Is your policy a "claims made" form or an "occurrence" form? Claims made policies provide coverage only for events that happen and are submitted as claims against the insured while the policy is in force.

In Memoriam Guilford C. Kater

In Memoriam Guilford C. KaterCINE learned with great sadness of the passing of Guilford "Dan" Kater, president of CINE from 1979-1980. A veteran of the US Army, Mr. Kater was employed by Modern Talking Pictures in 1953, becoming president in 1987 before retiring in 1991 and founding JD Communikaters. He represented the United States on the international jury at 23 international film festivals.

In his welcome to the attendees of the 1980 CINE Awards, Mr. Kater wrote, "During the 1980s international communications will continue to grow in importance. Major advances in communications technology make the exchange of information via audiovisuals more important than ever. CINE continues to meet the challenge....On behalf of the Board of Directors, it is a privilege and pleasure to thank each of you for your enthusiastic help, which makes it possible for this important work to continue."

Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, including longtime CINE Board Member Chris Kater.

CINE Updates

CINE has been giving filmmakers wings for over 50 years. Here's some news from two CINE alumni:

Mark Kendall, a 2011 CINE Special Jury Award-winner for his student documentary THE TIME MACHINE, has just received a grant from the Sundance Institute to help fund his next project, LA CAMIONETA. For more on this upcoming doc, follow Mark on Twitter and Facebook.

CINE's 2010 "5 on 5 for 5" Pitch Session opened doors for its winner, Kylie Krabbe, whose pitch caught the attention of CINE Board Member Daniel Tibbets, Studio Chief & SVP of Content for GoTV Studios. GoTV Studios optioned her project and has been working with Kylie developing her concept as a television series to pitch to cable and broadcast networks.

Congrats to Mark and Kylie - we can't wait to see the finished projects!
