Donald Thoms, CINE President, VP of Talent Development for Discovery Communications

Donald Thoms currently serves as vice president of Talent Development for Discovery Studios. In this new role, Thoms oversees efforts to scout and secure on-screen talent for Discovery Studios productions. Additionally, he serves as Discovery Studio’ primary liaison to the talent community as he works to identify and develop new on-air personalities to appear in series, specials and short form content created by Discovery Studios

Prior to joining Discovery Studios, Thoms has was vice president, Production for Discovery Health Channel/Discovery Health Media Enterprises. In this role, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Discovery Health production team and was responsible for a wide array of original and co- productions. In addition, he steered the strategic planning for Discovery Health productions, the management, and execution of all content, as well as managing parallel production plans among television, online, new media, and other businesses.

During Thoms’ time with Discovery Health Channel, the network saw double-digit growth in ad sales revenue and ratings and many the network’s most successful projects were grown under Thoms: NATIONAL BODY CHALLENGE, DR G: MEDICAL EXAMINER, YOU: THE OWNER&squo;S MANUAL, MYSTERY DIAGNOSIS, PLASTIC SURGERY: BEFORE and AFTER, LIFELINE, SUPER SURGERY AND BIRTHDAY LIVE! He is also responsible for nurturing the talents of Dr. Jan Adams, respected plastic surgeon, Dr. Mehmet Oz, world renowned heart specialist, Dr. Drew Pinsky, famous doctor to the stars in the area of addiction, as well as Dr. Jan Garavalia, Sara Snow, Dan Ho, and Nathan Lyon. Thoms also opened new opportunities for independent and minority filmmakers at Discovery Health with projects like CLOSE TO HOME, by Vanessa Roth, DANGEROUS DECEPTION: LIFE ON THE DOWN LOW by Michael Smith and Johnny Symon’s MEN HAVING BABIES all premiering on the network.

Prior to joining the Discovery Health network, Thoms was Vice President of Program Management at PBS where he was responsible for overseeing the packaging and delivery of PBS’s programming services. In addition, Thoms developed and evaluated programming projects as well as helped to develop on-air promotional initiatives for key programs. While at PBS, Thoms was liaison for independent and minority producers coming to public television. He created PBS’s series, INDEPENDENT LENS, which featured the works of independent filmmakers and the INDI SCENE, an extensive website promoting independent productions on PBS.

A native of Baltimore, Thoms currently is President of CINE the 50-year-old organization that recognizes excellence in film and video making. He is a former member the Board of Governors for the National Capital/Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).

Mathew Tombers, CINE Immediate Past President, Intermat, Inc.
Mathew Tombers is Managing Director of Intermat, Inc., a television company which executive produces programs and consults with industry companies on a variety of issues. Intermat, Inc. is currently involved in approximately thirty hours of television in various stages for a variety of networks. He is one of the Executive Producers of OFF TO WAR, a ten hour series for Discovery Times and for a one hour on international adoptions for Discovery Health. He has consulted a variety of companies, including Ted Turner Documentaries, WETA, Betelgeuse Productions, and Creation Films, Lou Reda Productions as well as many others.

Lauren Cardillo, CINE Treasurer, Fusilli Flims
Lauren Cardillo, CINE Treasurer and President of Fusilli Films, is an award-winning documentary filmmaker whose work on subjects ranging from the world’s longest footrace across the Sahara desert to the history of gold has earned national recognition. Her ability to tell compelling stories creatively has earned National News and Documentary Emmy Awards, Telly, CableAce, Chris and Gracie Awards, as well as several CINE Golden Eagles, an award from the New York Festivals and the Columbus International Film Festival Screenwriting Award. In 2007, Cardillo co-produced STAND UP: Muslim American Comics Come of Age, for Corporation for Public Broadcasting America at aCrossroads. Her current projects, also for PBS, are 9 to 5 No Longer, and a film which takes a look at the science behind the balloons in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade™. Cardillo’s 2006 PBS documentary, The Mother Road, starring Lauren and her Mom, took the classic road trip on a different path: Their mother-daughter drive down Route 66 is a journey not just down a national landmark, but through time’s barriers and across the generations. The Golden Eagle winner received a Gracie Award as well, was presented at the Sundance Independent Producers Conference, and reached 90% of the public television market. Formerly a Senior Producer for National Geographic’s Explorer Series, Cardillo has worked with MTV, VH1 and HBO. For CNN’s investigative and documentary unit, she produced an analysis of the savings and loan crisis which won CableAce and Chris Awards. Cardillo’s career began, fittingly, with “On a Wing and a Prayer”, a film she produced about Amelia Earhart as a student in Stanford University’s Graduate Documentary Film Program. Chris Kater, Video Placement Worldwide
Chris Kater, President of Video Placement Worldwide, an independent-sponsored educational video and DVD distribution company, is the current Chair of CINE’s International Affairs Committee. In that capacity, Chris is the current North American representative for the WorldMediaFestival, CINE’s sister festival, based in Hamburg, Germany. With Video Placement Worldwide, Chris has worked with the cultural sections of the embassies of Switzerland and the Netherlands in the distribution of informational films and videos for over 25 years. During that time, he has also worked with the embassies of Austria, Canada, Chile, Cypress, the European Union, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Switzerland in the distribution of their cultural films and videos to schools in the United States. Chris is the immediate past-president of Inforfilm, a group of international video distributors whose 26 member companies are primarily from Europe, Scandinavia, Australia and Canada, and which facilitates the distribution of informational video programs by utilizing local distribution firms to reach audiences in a specific country.

Sandie Viquez Pedlow, Public Broadcasting Service
Sandie Viquez Pedlow, Director of Stations Relations, PBS TeacherLine, is responsible for system communications of an online professional development service for teachers. She previously served as the Director of Program Strategies for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in Washington, DC. where she played a leading role in the development of public television series and specials addressing social issues, children and all aspects of American culture. Pedlow was instrumental in developing CPB programming initiatives incorporating new media and community outreach to reach new and diverse audiences. Some of the specials developed under her leadership include The Kennedy CenterPresentsAmericanos, American Family, Foto Novelas, Piri Thomas: Every Child is Born a Poet, The NewAmericans, Scottsboro: An American Tragedy, Sound andFury, Breaking the Cycle, The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo, America Rebuilds, Free toDance: The African American Presence in Modern Dance. As a key member of the CPB team that administered the founding of Latino Public Broadcasting, Pedlow led Latino producer forums in five major cities seeking input from community leaders and independent producers. Working with the U.S. Public Television International Consortium, Latin America Initiative (LAI), she sought co-productions with broadcasters in Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. Other positions held during her tenure at CPB were Associate Director, Drama, Culture and Arts, and Senior Program Officer. Prior to CPB, Pedlow was a producer at South Carolina Educational Television Network (SCETV) where she led the first U.S. public television exchange with Gosteleradio in the former Soviet Union. As a producer and manager of SCETV’s Writer/Producer Division, she developed documentaries, cultural and public affairs programs, and produced a series on the integration of the European community. Pedlow has served on the board of INPUT, the International Public Television Screening Conference and was the U.S. National Coordinator. She also served on the boards and editorial committees for P.O.V. and AmericanPlayhouse. Ms. Pedlow is a board member of Latino Public Broadcasting and CINE.

Mitchell Praver, Chief Operating Officer, National Public Radio
Mitch Praver, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of National Public Radio, brings more than 25 years in traditional and new media experience to CINE’s Board of Directors. Before joining National Public Radio, Praver was Executive Vice President, Business Development and Sales at Rockville, MD-based Hillcrest Labs, a software technology company. Prior to that he was General Manager of AOL’s Web Personals business. From 1998 to 2004 Praver was at National Geographic ultimately serving as President of NationalGeographic.com, its interactive businesses including the Web site, CD/DVD-ROM business and content development across new platforms. Previously, Praver was Vice-President of New Media Distribution for Discovery Networks and also led Verizon/TELE-TV’s programming and content acquisition team for one of the nation’s first VOD services called Stargazer. Earlier in his career, Praver was Vice President of Programming for the Katz Media Group and later served as Vice President of Programming for the Lifetime cable network.

William Spencer Reilly, Faith & Values Media
William Spencer Reilly is Vice President of Television Production and Programming at Faith & Values Media, the nation's largest coalition of Jewish and Christian faith groups dedicated to media production, distribution and promotion. In his present position, Mr. Reilly oversees the company's regular weekly productions and programming on Hallmark Channel as well as its primetime holiday specials. Leslie Sewell, The History Project
Head of The History Project, which produces historical documentaries, Leslie Sewell produced, wrote and directed Government Girls of World War II, which received national broadcast on PBS, was screened at the Library of Congress, and has been selected by numerous colleges and universities for their Women’s Studies programs. Sewell is completing a film on Iraq and Afghanistan in conjunction with Manifold Productions, and is at work on a biography of Alexander Hamilton for PBS. An experienced senior television producer, Sewell has written, directed and produced network television programming for nearly twenty years. With experience in documentary production and short form news, she has produced for NBC Nightly News, the Today Show, the Public Broadcasting Service and National Public Radio. For PBS and the Fox News Channel, she has produced television pieces including Bill Moyer’s Now, To the Contrary with Bonnie Erbe, and Special Report with Brit Hume. Sewell has managed live coverage and supervised logistical coverage of events such as national political conventions and presidential trips, and has supervised news correspondents, writers, editors, camera personnel and other technicians. Leslie Sewell has a BA from Northwestern University and is working on an MA in Classics at St. JohnÅfs College in Santa Fe.

Kathy Slobogin, CNN
Kathy Slobogin is Managing Editor of CNN’s award-winning documentary program, CNN Presents. Named to this position in October 2002, she is responsible for all aspects of the long-form series, from story selection through the final cut. She is based in Washington, D.C. Previously, Slobogin was the Education and Family-issues correspondent for CNN. Before this, she worked as a senior correspondent for CNN&TIME, CNN’s weekly prime-time news magazine. Before reporting for CNN&TIME, Slobogin served as senior correspondent for Impact, a weekly prime-time investigative newsmagazine. Slobogin was named a correspondent in 1992 after joining CNN’s special assignment unit as a producer in 1990. In 1992 and 1996, Slobogin was a correspondent for the CNN Democracy in America documentary series on presidential election issues. The series won the Joan Shorenstein Barone Award both years. Maggie Burnette Stogner, Blue Bear Films
Margaret (Maggie) Burnette Stogner is a seasoned film, video, and new media professional with over 20 years of experience. She is founder and owner of Blue Bear Films, an independent film and media arts company providing development and production services. Recent projects include the world-touring King Tut exhibit; the Geographic Literacy campaign; and program development for a range of cable broadcasters. Previously, she was Senior Producer of National Geographic's documentary series EXPLORER and ULTIMATE EXPLORER, which won numerous Emmys, a Peabody and a Dupont award under her supervision. Margaret has a Masters in Communication/Documentary Film from Stanford University and began her career in San Francisco, where she gained experience on a wide range of nonfiction programs for PBS, NBC, TBS, as well as on features for Lucas Films. She mentors emerging filmmakers by teaching film and media arts at American University and serving on the Board of CINE.
