AFI-Discovery Channel SILVERDOCS 2009 presents 122 films representing 55 countries selected from 1,976 submissions. Highlights include:

  • The US Premiere of Opening Night film MORE THAN A GAME chronicling baskeball icon LeBron James, his team and coach at the very beginning of his career. Moderated by Michele Norris, Host of NPR's All Things Considered.
  • World Premiere of Closing Night Film THE NINE LIVES OF MARION BARRY exploring the rise and fall of the former DC Mayor.
  • Guggenheim Honoree Albert Maysles joined by Barbara Kopple, the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and other special guests for a conversation about his career. Moderated by Entertainment Weekly's Lisa Schwarzbaum. Fest to screen several Maysles features and rarely seen shorts.
  • Special Programs include FACING ALI, with Special Guest Muhammad Ali, also featured in festival screenings of SOUL POWER and WHEN WE WERE KINGS.
  • Ensemble Filmmaking Centerpiece Screening CONVENTION; and World Premiere of RIP: A REMIX MANIFESTO, newly cut with open-source audience content. Performed by Eclectic Method, Mash-up DJs, and SOUL POWER's Fred Wesley.
  • Festival circuit favorites including: THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE, WE LIVE IN PUBLIC, THE COVE, WINNEBAGO MAN, BEST WORST MOVIE and NO IMPACT MAN.
  • International Documentary Conference to explore "The Future is Strange" and "Storytelling in an Always On World" with Keynote by Tom Bernard of Sony Pictures Classics, plus master classes, panels, pitch sessions, "Doc Talks" and other special events.

  • Are you ready to pitch your next project? Workshop with SpeakEasy - In this hands-on session, storytelling experts from SpeakEasy DC will walk participants through the process of discovering their own story and shaping it into a compelling narrative. The workshop will be a mix of demonstration, interactive exercises, discussion and feedback from the instructors.

  • THROUGH A LENS DARKLY and DIGITAL DIASPHORA FAMILY REUNION - Together, THROUGH A LENS DARKLY: BLACK PHOTOGRAPHERS AND THE EMERGENCE OF A PEOPLE and DIGITAL DIASPHORA FAMILY REUNION represent a new model of participatory nonfiction filmmaking where the public contributes content that helps unlock hidden or forgotten histories. By merging family photo collections with public archival holdings, the two projects will present a more complete historical record of African Americans as told through the lives of the people who actually lived it.
  • TIME WARP Camera Demo - Join us for a demonstration of Photron's amazing FASTCAM SA1 camera, used for the slow motion imaging of fascinating phenomena, animal behavior and human feats on Discovery Channel's hit television series, TIME WARP. Viewers see popcorn popping at 10,000 frames per second (fps), water balloons popping at 20,000 fps, and much more.
