» KUDOS FROM CINE

At CINE, we’re thrilled to recognize the success of our friends, colleagues and sponsors.

When the Emmy® Award nominations were announced this week, a number of CINE Award-winning productions were among those honored, including 2008 CINE Golden Eagle recipients The War, Top Chef, American Masters, Intervention and Antiques Roadshow.

CINE sponsors Discovery Communications (eight nominations) and History (four) were also recognized.

Congratulations to these and all Emmy® nominees on their outstanding achievements!

Our Board of Directors is also making a difference. Lauren Cardillo of Fusilli Films received a regional Emmy® Award for her film The Mother Road. Former CINE President Mathew Tombers recently led two panels at the Silverdocs Festival: "Silver Panel: What Producers Need to Know in 2008" and "Commissioning in 2008: What Do Networks Want Today?" And Maggie Burnette Stogner of Blue Bear Films produced, directed and wrote Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures. Narrated by Khaled Hosseini, the film will air on WETA and show in the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art.

President’s Letter

Hello everyone, and welcome to our summer edition of the CINE Newsletter. As usual, we have a lot to share with you, and I’m glad you've returned to us.

It’s been a while since our 50th Anniversary Gala, which was held at the brand new Newseum. It was a huge success and I want to thank everyone and every organization who provided sponsorship and time, two of the most precious commodities. I just can’t thank David McKillop from History enough for the very generous sponsorship funds. Without David and History, we would have had a very different event. We welcome both CNN and Chubb as new sponsors and thanks go out to our returning sponsors, Discovery Communications, Kodak and Henninger Media Services.

An important goal for us here at CINE is the assistance of student and emerging filmmakers in the development of their careers. We want to give this group as much information and access to broadcasters and production entities as we can, and this month's edition is a reflection of that focus.

We feature a great interview with Pat Aufderheide, the Director of the Center for Social Media at American University, who is one of the biggest supporters of filmmakers. She gives insight into fair use practices, a thorny subject for even the most experienced filmmakers. Also, you’ll read information from CINE sponsor the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies detailing what you need to know about film package insurance. And coming soon to our website, you’ll hear a really terrific interview with Ken Goldstein, Chubb’s Worldwide Media Liability Manager and Joe Fitzgerald, National Manager for Chubb’s Entertainment Division. They spoke to CINE Executive Director Wendy Revel to provide further insight the insurance issues facing filmmakers.

And I love making this announcement: We have just formed the CINE Educational Advisory Board. Comprised of educators from some of the top film programs in the country, the Educational Advisory Board will counsel us on the best ways to reach and support student filmmakers. One of their first suggestions was to increase our presence on the Internet, and as you will see below, we have done just that. We are so excited about this new group of professionals joining forces with us, and more are signing up all the time.

And finally, please don’t forget to enter your programs into our Fall Competition. All films must be entered by August 15, and those entered by August 1 will receive a $25 discount.

Thanks everyone!

Opening Credits: A Guide to Film Package Insurance

ChubbBy Gene Williams
The Chubb Group of Insurance Companies

Most film package insurance policies available from specialized global insurers provide the same basic set of insurance protection for a film or video production, but not all policies or insurance carriers are created equal.

A production could be a short subject or feature film, a commercial or music video, a television series or special, or an educational or industrial video. The medium may be any film or video format or any combination of recording and output media.

In this article, I will pinpoint some of the different exposures faced by select aspects of film productions and how a film producers package insurance policy might respond to each situation.
