• Steve Altman is Vice President, Office of Business Affairs at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

Digital technology has created new services, new opportunities and new challenges. Some of these services are going beyond broadcasting by combining interactive and broadcast elements. Some programs don't even make it to the screen and are produced directly for the web. Wireless technology manufacturers are developing new applications that will allow program material to be distributed through wireless telephones. Datacasting, Electronic Program Guides (EPGs), Personal TV, PVRs and video-on-demand are all happening now.

The question of rights is a major challenge for producers today, and making sure that you have obtained the rights and licenses for all the program material is a step you do not want to forget. How do you make sure that you are protected? What are the questions you need to ask of your attorney? Music rights, image rights and digital rights--do you need them all? As producers we like to think about ways to extend the life of our projects, but at what cost? How can we be prepared to meet the challenges of the new distribution media and make sure that all of our programs have all the rights cleared before they hit the street?

Ignorance is no longer an excuse. To play in this arena you have to know about rights and clearances--for the people you hire and the music you use. Learn how to prepare for your next program so that it is ready to meet the challenges of these new technologies. Learn from the attorneys that know the law and from a producer who paid the price. Come and join CINE as we roll out the first program in our Professional Development Series
